Should I Stay or Should I go?

Should I stay or Should I go? deja vu - I already asked this question 2 years ago when I was still working in Philippines and at the verge of deciding whether to apply for a job overseas.

Now here I am, after two years I’m again asking the same question: “Should I stay or Should I go?”.. it may sounds simple question to you but really its hard for me there are people depending in my income.

Can you help me decide?  Should I stay or Should I go?.. Here is the scenario?

Job Scenario A:

I’m in stable position, a very stable position without too much pressure in job but I see little career advancement.  Security wise, company is stable - one of the big companies in Kuwait.  Benefits are fine as well.  There is a planned expansion and I’m one of the key player problem is, this may happen 2-3 years from now..should I wait - should I stay or should I go?

Job Scenario B:

Here is the company that offers me a position and salary that  is very very hard to resist.  Twice my salary now and a management position.  Company is smaller than my current company but it was founded 1973 - so the company more or less secure. Now the company has a business expansion and I’m lucky to have given the opportunity to be part of the pioneer personnel who will build & expand a new engineering department.  In other words I’m back to the drawing board, back from the scratch but this will surely a 3 ladder career jump :) - new adjustment, new challenge.  Should I stay or should I go?

Now, my dear readers, could you help me decide please..

  1. I remember the joke, Q:”Did you ride or did you walk” A: “Of course did you ride!” lol :D so My answer is “of course should I go” … Seriously, you must have to ask yourself first anong mga priorities mo as of the moment, better salary or stable job? I’m not saying that you will not become stable in the other companies that you wish to join but as you said you will start from the scratch pa and etc. etc. , if you think madali kang maka adjust and can accept new challenges so why not, go and be practical my friend, working in a small or big company is all the same as long as long as we can get all the benefits that we want most, and that’s why we’re here, right? Sabi pa ng asawa ko, at least may ibang job akong matutunan, he joined a new company also less than a month ago who offered him twice his salary of the previous company he used to work for 5 years! He still in the adjustment stage nowadays, lol :D

thanks for the the comment rianne.. actually today I just arrive from interview from this Company B.. the manager asked me.. what should I choose? the package or the career?.. :)

I choose package of course.. I told her if the package is right. I’l be more motivated to exert my best..best performance follows career advancement and recognition and as a closing remark. I told them that I’l be an “asset” to them and not a “liability”… :) yabang ko noh..

so far oks naman ang result - they want immediate hiring.. kaso ang problem now is the release from my current company..oks lang kaya yun di ba magkakaproblem yun? tingin mo?

  3. that’s the problem of almost all pinoys here in Kuwait, the RELEASE! some of my friends took an emergency leave from their companies when they planned to transfer, then they start to work to the new company while they were on leave…after a month saka pa sila humihingi ng release, that’s one of the most effective ways daw sabi nila, but I think it depends upon the company. GOOD LUCK and I wish you all the best!

ooopps.. thats frightening.. I should have asked 3x my salary if that is the case.. heheh **greedy me**..

anyway, i think the best thing for me to do is check with HR, they should release me or make a counter-offer atlease.. hehehe..

thanks for taking time to advise me..

have a nice day to you rianne

  5. I think you go for job offer B… both of them are well-established companies, and sabi mo nga the only problem for Company A is that you’ll have to wait for 2-3 years pa before the said project… eh di ba maraming pwedeng mangyari in 2-3 years… maaaring may pumasok na mas magaling pa sa iyo at siya ang mas mapansin at i-neglect ka… things can happen, changes can happen…

pero here comes Company B… also an established company… but the only problem is yung department na mapupuntahan mo lng ang bago… but the company as a whole is well-established na nga… so ano ang dapat mong gawin? I’d say GRAB IT!!!

sabi nga nila, “opportunity knocks only once…” at “at the end of a river is the beginning of a bigger sea…” I think, triple the salary, management position, hahawak ka pa ng tao… why not? a bigger responsibility is very stressing… pero that what makes work really exciting isn’t it? hope that helps! hehehe :)

  6. that’s what my husband did when he transferred few weeks ago, he photo copied his CV with remarks from the manager with all the benefits he will going to get from the new company and showed it to their HR, he asked them if they will release him or make a counter offer.

the result: they refused to release him instead pinantayan nila ang basic salary ng new company but still they cannot afford to give the other benefits like free in private hospital, 28 days annual vacation with 2 months salary and free round trip ticket, etc., so they resolved it by releasing him after 5 months pa, they allowed him to work in the new company but still visits the old one during his free time since they still need him badly during these days.

so once again good luck! i hope you will make a right decision :)

BTW, i got a call from kharafi’s HR last month, they offered me a job there, she called me 5 times but i refused to come for an interview, she offered me the same salary with what i have now so what’s the use of transferring, right? sabi pa nya i should come for an interview dahil pwede pa raw dagdagan ang offer nila, i still didn’t show up, so i’m thinking now that ikaw nga aalis dyan e ba’t pa ako mag papa interview, lol :D

naku, ang haba na ng comment ko…have a nice day!

    :) thats good…
kn offers the same benefit gaya ng na mention mo above.. you should try also.

i’m thinking to leave dahil sa career jump and package.. siempre..but if kn will counter offer malamang mag stay ako.:)

ngayon wait na lang ako ng black and white.. naka pag invetigate na rin ako and sabi ng hr namin eh nag re release naman sila sa band ko heheh wish me luck.. need lots of them now..

so wait nal ang ako ng susunod na kabanata.. pag pasa ng resignation and nag counter offer, and if the price is right.. we’ll see..

thanks and have a nice day..

p.s. try mo visit .. or interview.. malay mo.. :)

  8. Para sa akin bro go for B dahil lahat naman tayo rito sa abroad especially sa middle East have no plan to reach 60 years old. Nandito tayo for a short term as possible so kailangan mataas ang salary. It is like this: gusto mo 10 years or sa 5 years with the same benefits and sahod? Or sabi mo nga mas mataas ang offer sa B. Wag mo akong kalimutan ihire ha?

  9. wisewealthbuilder on June 24th, 2008 at 4:08 pm

    you are right Ed…

I just need to make sure the transfer policy. If there will be no problem I’l go to company B.

hire you? sure why not.. :)

  10. Go GO gO! kung san mas magandang opportunity… sabi pa ng iba.. there’s no such thing as loyalty.. hehehehe.. :D pero pag masaya ka na sa previous work mo… stick to it.. pero pag di ka masaya at gusto mo mag explore.. go for the new one :D hehehe..

  11. thanks for the comment jehz..
sabagay nga not all opportunity knock twice :)
masaya ako now sa work ko per feeling ko mas magiging happy ako sa new company heheheh..

  12. I’ve been working in a Established company in Abu Dhabi, having a good salary and benefits. But my point is my career. This company is operating more than 20 years and all workers are more senior than me. It will takes time for me to be promoted coz here politics is more. Currently, I have a good offer, newly constructed company, and offering me a higher position but salary and benefits are the same. I accepted the post coz of age factor. I’m 31 right now, an Engineer and I know that I’ve been on the right path. If you are more than 40 years old you better to stick up in one company.

  13. @ahrgy,

that was a good point to consider - thanks for the advise. I’m 28 years old now and I think we have something in common. We should put ourselves in a position or job post which will give us better wage and benefit in the future-3-4-5 years from now.. so that when we are at 40s we will stick with one company and decide whether to retire or not.

i really appreciate your comment. have a nice day
